North Ridge

A compact mountain residence shaped by stone, timber and the tension between shelter and exposure.

North Ridge

Ridge House is a self-initiated residential study exploring architecture at the edge of an exposed mountain landscape.

The project is conceived as a compact, monolithic volume anchored to the rock, with restrained openings framing the surrounding horizon. Stone gives the building weight and permanence, while timber introduces a warmer layer at the entrance and inhabited zones.

The visualization focuses on the contrast between shelter and exposure: a heavy architectural object set against an open, shifting atmosphere. Snow, rock and low winter light were treated as part of the architecture rather than as background scenery.

The study explores how a small residence can feel both protected and deeply connected to its landscape.

Purpose

To explore how a compact residence can establish a strong architectural identity within an exposed mountain landscape through mass, material and carefully controlled openings.

Visual decisions

A vertical composition was chosen to emphasize the relationship between the residence, the exposed terrain and the large volume of sky. The camera sits slightly below the building, giving the mass a sense of weight without relying on exaggerated perspective. The cold environmental palette is balanced by neutral stone and warmer timber surfaces, while the winter light reinforces the sense of isolation and shelter.

Outcome

A restrained residential image where architecture, atmosphere and landscape operate as one composition, allowing the building to respond to the severity of its setting rather than dominate it.
