Still Court

A residential study exploring the relationship between privacy and openness through an inward-facing courtyard, exposed concrete and controlled openings.

Still Court

Still Court is a self-initiated residential study centred on rethinking domestic life around an internal courtyard.

The architecture presents a more controlled relationship to the exterior while opening itself toward the courtyard. Exposed concrete volumes, dark metal framing and vertical timber surfaces form a restrained but layered material language.

Rather than functioning as residual space between volumes, the courtyard becomes a shared spatial element connecting different parts of the house visually and physically. Soft overcast light was used to place emphasis on proportion, material and spatial continuity rather than dramatic form.

The series focuses less on how the house appears from outside and more on how it might be experienced from within.

Purpose

To explore how a central courtyard can mediate privacy, daylight and spatial continuity through a restrained material palette.

Visual decisions

The first image places the camera inside the courtyard, treating the architecture as an inhabited space rather than an exterior object. The upper volume, courtyard plane and foreground planting establish distinct layers of depth.
The second view adopts a more frontal and controlled composition, using the large concrete frame to turn the courtyard into a second image within the image. Overcast light reveals subtle material variation while maintaining a restrained relationship between concrete, timber and dark metal.

Outcome

A restrained residential series where privacy and openness operate as parts of the same spatial system, defined through material, proportion and the courtyard.
